In this video, we show you how to install a Yamaha Air Drive tuning chip on the Gas Gas Light Trail 2.0 eBike. By installing this chip, you can bypass the factory 25 km/h restriction and unlock higher top speeds up to 45 km/h. Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Phase 1: Accessing the Motor
- Flip the Bike: Turn your eBike upside down to easily access the motor housing and bash guard.
- Remove the Bash Guard: Unscrew the two bolts at the front of the bash guard, followed by the two at the rear. Tip: Be careful not to drop or lose the washers on the rear bolts!
- Locate the Motor Plugs: Once the guard is removed, locate the factory wiring connectors. Depending on your specific frame, they may be right in front or tucked slightly inside the frame cavity where you’ll need to fish them out.
Phase 2: Connecting the Yamaha Air Drive Tuning Chip
- Disconnect Factory Wiring: Carefully unplug the required motor connectors. Important: One of the connectors has a lifting tab—do not push the orange part down; pull the tab up to release it.
- Plug in the Chip: Take your tuning chip and connect it in-line with the motor. First, connect the 3-pin plug. Next, connect the remaining plug (it may be a different color, but matches the connector type). Align the notch with the orange tab and push until you hear a solid click.
- Stow the Chip: Tuck the chip neatly into the frame cavity in front of the motor. To prevent any rattling while riding, wrap the chip in a bit of foam or secure it with double-sided tape.
- Reinstall the Guard: Bolt the bash guard back onto the frame.
How to Operate and Adjust the Chip
Once the chip is installed, you control it directly through your handlebar remote. Here is how to turn it on, turn it off, and adjust your custom speed limit.
- Turn the Unlock ON/OFF: With the bike powered on, press the sequence Up, Down, Up, Down, Up. If the battery indicator lights climb all the way to four, the chip is active (set to 45 km/h). Repeating the sequence will make the lights drop, indicating the chip is turned off (returned to the factory 25 km/h limit).
- Decrease the Top Speed: Activate the chip (`Up, Down, Up, Down, Up`), then switch to the setting mode by pressing down, and then press Down, Up, Down, Up repeatedly. You will notice the battery indicator dropping. The lowest setting (pulsing five times) represents 25 km/h.
- Increase the Top Speed: While in setting mode, press Up, Down, Up, Down repeatedly. The battery indicator will climb. Each “up/down” step adds 1 km/h to the top speed, all the way up to 45 km/h.
