In this video, we show you how to unlock the speed limit on a Focus Sam² equipped with the Bosch Gen 4 motor. Using the VolSpeed V4 tuning chip, you can easily bypass the factory 25 km/h limit and reach speeds up to 45 km/h—and the best part is that your speedometer will still display the correct speed!
Important Compatibility Note: This specific chip works with all Bosch motors that have the speed sensor magnet located on the rear disc or on the spokes. If your magnet is located on the tire valve, you will need a different chip.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Phase 1: Accessing the Motor Connections
- Remove the Motor Cover: Locate the plastic cover on the non-drive side of the motor. Remove the two T20 Torx bolts holding it in place.
- Rotate the Cover: Once the screws are out, rotate and pull the cover away to expose the motor’s wiring ports.
Phase 2: Connecting the VolSpeed V4 Chip
- Unplug the Speed Sensor: Locate and pull out the 2-pin wire (this is the gray speed sensor plug).
- Connect the 2-Pin Wiring: Take the smaller 2-pin connector from the VolSpeed chip and plug it into the cable you just removed. Ensure you match the wire colors: Red to Red, and Black to Black.
- Unplug the Display Cable: Just above the speed sensor port, locate the black connector with four wires and pull it out.
- Connect the 4-Pin Wiring: Plug the VolSpeed chip’s 4-pin connector into this cable. Again, match the colors perfectly: Yellow to Yellow, Green to Green, Black to Black, and Red to Red.
- Plug into the Motor: Take the remaining plugs on the VolSpeed chip and plug them directly into the empty original Bosch ports on the motor. They are keyed to only go in one way—if they resist, just rotate them until they slide in easily.
- Stow and Reassemble: Carefully tuck the tuning chip and the extra wiring into the cavity so they fit under the cover. Clip the cover back over the front of the motor and reinstall the two T20 Torx screws.
How to Activate and Adjust the Speed Limit
Unlike some chips that stay on permanently, the VolSpeed V4 requires activation every time you turn the bike on. This is a great feature if you only want to use the unlock on specific rides.
- Activate the Chip: Turn your bike on. Press and hold the Minus (-) button on your remote for about 5 seconds. Your display will momentarily show a speed (e.g., 32 km/h) to indicate the current unlocked limit.
- Adjust the Top Speed: While that unlocked speed limit is showing on the screen, press the Plus (+) button to increase the maximum speed all the way up to 45 km/h.
- Turn Off the Unlock: To disable it, simply hold the Minus (-) button again until the display shows 25 km/h.
The chip will remember your custom top speed setting, but remember to hold the minus button for 5 seconds to activate it each time you start a new ride. Watch the full installation and our test ride below!
